Research on the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis)

inhabiting Lake Ludaš began back in 2011. On a relatively small study area of 9 hectares along the northern shore of the lake, near the visitor center, a total of 740 individuals were captured by 2025. Each captured turtle received a permanent, unique marking, allowing researchers to recognize them if recaptured. Interestingly, many of the adult females that were marked in 2011 have been regularly recaptured, measured, and released back into their habitat for over 15 years.

This data shows that pond turtles are exceptionally long-lived (over 25 years), and that females are highly attached to specific feeding areas within their habitat. The females we regularly capture are in good health, which indicates that their habitat is of suitable quality. You can read more about our findings on this population here.

The females at this location are gravid during May, carrying an average of six eggs per clutch. In June, they leave Lake Ludaš and begin their journey to nesting grounds where they dig holes in the soil and lay eggs. This epic journey involves making their way through thick reed beds several meters wide, encountering dogs, cats, and other potential predators, and crossing roads. Pond turtles on roads need your help: slow down, stop, or even get out of your vehicle and carry the frightened animal across the road in the direction it was headed. Additional support for their nesting migration comes from JP Palić-Ludaš, the manager of this protected area. The managers occasionally mow the reed belt in key areas to help the turtles preserve energy for nesting.

The research is conducted under the guidance of the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade. Researchers from the Institute of Zoology, along with biology and ecology students, traditionally come during the summer ringing camp. For two weeks, together with numerous volunteers, they study the armored inhabitants of Lake Ludaš.
